Along the corridors of Government Buildings in Dublin and in the offices of the Irish embassy in the diplomatic heart of Washington DC, uncertainty was in the air.There were only weeks to go before a new Taoiseach was scheduled to make the annual pilgrimage to the White House with a bowl of shamrock tucked under his arm, to meet with a new US president, but nobody seemed to know how it was going to unfold. The Irish Government had been assured informally that the ceremony was still in Barack Obama's diary, but there was still no sign of an official invitation. It was an anxious wait for all concerned.Barack Obama was an unknown quantity -- miraculously, some assiduous genealogical archaeologists had unearthed a genuine Irish link between the new President and the auld sod, courtesy of a great-great-great-grandfather from Offaly. But so far Barack Obama had remained aloof from this new root in his family tree.And he was a new breed of American president, elected not by the traditional networks of class, religion or ethnic allegiance, but by a new configuration of voters of all ages and backgrounds.Finally, the invitation came. But the uncertainty lingered. The currency of being Irish in the world had changed from burnished into tarnished gold. The Celtic Tiger had leapt too near the sun and had plummeted to earth, defanged and defeated. And the last incumbent in the White House, George W, hadn't seemed too keen on all the Paddy's Day palaver, even during the boom years when Irish stocks were soaring worldwide. Nobody knew if the luck of the Irish was about to end at the hands of President Obama. But the green fountain was the first clue of what was to come. When the fountains on the north and south lawns of the White House bubbled to life on the morning of March 17, the running water was a bright mint green. That had never happened before, and it was the brainwave of Michelle Obama, born into the Irish stronghold of south Chicago who liked to see her city's river run emerald every Paddy's Day.There was change, but now there was also hope. And by mid-morning the doors of the White House were thrown open to the Taoiseach and his Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin.The two men settled into a semi-circle of seats in the bright yellow-gold oval-shaped room where so much destiny has been decided; outside the window was the pillared cloister where Jack and Bobby Kennedy paced and agonised over whether to rain nuclear fire down on Cuba; inside the curved walls stood the carved oak Resolute desk from which Ronald Reagan watched the Cold War thaw and dissolve; where Bill Clinton sat working the phones late at night to Belfast, Dublin and London to hammer together peace in the North, and from where George W Bush sent troops to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.And as the sun streamed in the windows last Tuesday, inside the daffodil-coloured room, a budding kinship began to blossom. They made the oddest of couples, the burly, resolutely rural and frequently cagey Brian, side by side with the multi-ethnic, graceful and magnetic Barack. This part of the day's business is normally a quick affair; the media reporters and photographers are swiftly herded through the room with just enough time to snap off some grip-and-grin shots.But not this time. Not this president. He wanted to chew the fat with the press about his first encounter with the Taoiseach. "We may be cousins," he laughed merrily, referring to his distant kin from Brian's patch of Ireland. A remarkably relaxed Brian grinned right back. "President Obama said he looks forward to coming to Offaly. The only thing I can say to him is that he is not going to share a slate with me, I cannot compete with this man, even in Offaly," he joked.And this was just a piece of it. The opener to a day of dialogue and priceless, precious access to the most powerful corridors of power in the world. This wasn't just window-dressing; the pair discussed a wide range of subjects during their 40-minute pow-wow, from the light subject of Obama's Irish roots, to the crucial issues of the global economy, the undocumented Irish in America, trade relations between the two countries, the question of the government taking in detainees from Guantanamo, the recent violence in the North, the war in Afghanistan, and the President's stated plan to penalise US companies based in tax-friendly countries such as Ireland.Brian Cowen wasn't in the US to sell himself, he was there on the deadly serious mission of re-instating confidence in the battered brand of Ireland Inc.He had spent the first two days of his visit in New York, attending a clatter of business-related functions. At an Enterprise Ireland event on Monday he announced that contracts worth €100m had been landed by Irish companies during a two-day trade mission to New York.The New York leg of his trip was important of course, but almost as much was at stake in Washington DC.The patronage of the President of the United States, even a weakened US in the grip of a ferocious recession, is a huge feather in the Irish cap. No other country has an annual free pass into the White House -- British PM Gordon Brown's recent (and shorter) meeting with Barack Obama was a far more low-key affair. But before lunchtime on Tuesday all anxiety had vanished. Barack Obama didn't just go through the Paddy's Day motions, a brief annual sop to the 44 million-or-so Americans who regard themselves as Irish, he wrapped the green flag around him for all to see.At the shamrock ceremony after the meeting, the President heaped praise on our nation. "Irish signatures are on our founding documents, Irish blood has been spilled on our battlefields, Irish sweat went into building our greatest cities, we're better for their contributions to democracy and we're richer for their art and their literature, their poetry and their songs," he said. "Rarely in world history has a nation so small had so large an impact."The day unfolded like silk. More tributes were heaped on Irish heads at the House Speaker's lunch on Capitol Hill -- a rare event when ferociously partisan Republicans and Democrats down their stilettos and take up knives and forks for a peaceful lunch."They unite for one debate only -- who is more Irish than who," explained the President to much merriment from some of the more battle-scarred members of the Hill.Brian Cowen rose to each occasion, casting aside his usual monotonous delivery. At the lunch, he quoted Daniel O'Connell's words: "My sympathy with distress is not confined within the narrow bounds of my own green island . . . my heart walks abroad."He added: "I know, here in this place, as public representatives, you work every day for the common good and for the values which we all share. We know too that, for all who celebrate St Patrick's Day, your hearts also 'walk abroad' as we work together now and in the future." It was all about forging bonds and strengthening links, amassing friends in lofty places who may be in a position to throw a lifeline to a country in distress.And at the evening party in the White House, the last laughter-filled event of a long day, Barack Obama had a quote of his own for the extended Irish clan packed into the East Room. "Tonight, in this room with all of you, I'm reminded of the words of my favourite poet, Yeats. 'There are no strangers here -- only friends you haven't met yet'," he said.We can do with a pal like the US President right now.
